'What Makes A Man' is a discussion-focused 'un-conference' to explore how ideas of gender play out in everyday for both men and women in various walks of life. WMAM explores the spectrum of identities, experiences and realities that determine ‘what makes a man’.

In Conversation With Byron Hurt
@byronhurt
Moderated and Hosted by: Kunle Bristow, Eternia, and Shaka Licorish (Manifesto)

Byron is an American activist, lecturer, writer, and award-winning documentary filmmaker. In addition to making "Barack & Curtis: Manhood, Power, & Respect" and "Soul Food Junkies" he made the classic doc "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" a 2006 documentary film written, produced, and directed by Byron Hurt. The documentary explores the issues of masculinity, violence, homophobia and sexism in hip hop music and culture, through interviews with artists, academics and fans. Hurt's activism in gender issues and his love of hip hop caused him to feel what he described as a sense of hypocrisy, and began working on the film.

About White Ribbon, What Makes A Man & Jeff Perera

White Ribbon (www.whiteribbon.ca) is the world’s largest grassroots effort to engage men and young men in reimagining ideas of masculinity and help end gender based violence.

The unique trademark of WMAM is the blurring of the lines between speaker and the audience: rather than presenters giving long lectures with little space for dialogue and real learning, diverse speakers share short informal talks designed to spark a preceding discussion and reflection with the audience.

Jeff Perera is a Community Engagement Manager with White Ribbon who founded the What Makes A Man conference. Here is a piece he wrote re: Chris Brown, Tupac and cycles of violence young men are trapped in:

Award-winning poet, actor, and writer Carlos Andrés Gómez is a supremely gifted storyteller with a captivating voice whose power resonates equally on the live stage and on the page. Like many men in our society, Gómez grew up believing that he should be ready to fight at all times, treat women as objects, and close off his emotional self. It wasn’t until he discovered acting that he began to realize the true cost of squelching one’s emotions—and how aggression dominates everything that young males are taught.
